	The effect of the chinchilla gene cch on red pigment is well visible on this picture. While the dark sepia shadings are virtually unchanged by the chinchilla gene, the red pigment gets diluted into white. These mice have the common fault of this variety - light noses. The fault is more prominent on the mouse in the right, the mouse on the left has actually quite a good nose colouring for a Marten. Marten Sable is genetically a Sable with the Chinchilla factor.

Many of the problems concerning Sable breeding are true with Marten Sables too and accordingly they don't breed true. This variety is bred usually mating Marten Sable to Black Fox or if there is no Marten Sable to start with, mating Red to Black Fox should give a starting point. Yet another option is a Chinchilla to Sable cross.

As one English breeder put it: "To say Marten is complex is an understatement. To say yes it will breed true, is the laugh of the century. It is not a breed for the inexperienced amateurs, or a few rofessionals, because of the space, time wasting, and above all the thought of what will come next.... I have already had seven different varieties. (from one original Marten Sable to Black Fox crossing)" The Marten Sable has a lighter top colour than the Sable, with red coloring replaced by white.
